My cold frame was put up over a small portion of one of the garden beds last Sunday, February 20th. I plan on starting some lettuce seeds in 2 more days, depending on the weather. If the weather forecast continues to look very cold into the latter part of next week, I might hold off [...] I ordered all of the extra seeds I need for this year’s garden a few days ago. Now the agonizing wait for warmer weather starts. I am really looking forward to spring this year!! As I am writing this post, it is 17 degrees outside with snow flurries coming down. It has been REALLY cold here in Central Indiana since Christmas day. The 2009 gardening season was quite successful for me. I tried several new things in the [...] Harvest has now officially ended for the 2009 garden season. Surprisingly, a few of the brussels sprouts that remained on the plants were still harvestable on December 14th, despite the very cold temperatures that were experienced the few weeks prior. The remaining older sprouts that remain on the lower portion of the plants will not be [...] Well, the warm November weather is now but a memory as the first hard freeze hit the garden about 4 days ago. Low temperatures dropped to around 15 degrees for two nights in a row and the high temperatures struggled to get above freezing. This morning, the garden was blanketed by the season’s first measurable snowfall [...] I received my onion plants on March 27th and planted them out in the garden the same day. I planted most of my lettuce seedlings out under the hoop on April 1st (see picture below). April 1st is my goal for getting my lettuce seedlings in the ground every year. The weather has been fairly [...] The weather has been very dry and has turned relatively warm for late March. My early spring garden is slowly taking shape. I planted peas yesterday under two 8 foot long pea fences (see picture below). I was able to harvest about 3 or 4 pounds of carrots from the last covered plot on January 9th. I was actually surprised on how much I was able to dig/pull out of the ground.
